This walkthrough will take you through the quest: The Mind of Madness step by step so you get the infamous Wabbajack from Sheogorath, Daedric Prince of Madness!
Head to Solitude if you can’t fast travel talk to a carriage and pay the fee, carriages can be found outside holds (Eg. Whiterun), when you get there head to the Bard’s college. The college is towards the end of the town near the Blue Palace and Proudspire Manor.
Find a mad beggar called Dervenin roaming the streets around this area. Once you find him speak to him and he will ask you to find his master in a wing of the Blue Palace.
To get into the wing you will need to speak to the steward and obtain a key from the woman he sends you to. You can do this through [Bribery], [Persuasion] or [Intimidation]. Once you enter the wing you just need to head down the path for a little bit before you are teleported away from the wing.
You are suddenly standing before an extravagant banquet, in the middle of a woodland area, surrounded by stone archways. Two people are sitting at the table, one sitting on a throne, and the other a depressed man. The latter appears to be Pelagius III, complaining of various woes, to the delight of the man across from him. Pelagius will leave after a short conversation.
Walk up to the other man and speak to him. He is none other than Sheogorath the Daedric Prince of Madness. Tell him you have a message for him and that he needs to return from vacation. Sheogorath says he will leave if you can make your way out of Pelagius’ mind. He will give you an item called the Wabbajack to help you. Walking through each of the arches will take you to one of three scenes. Go through all three arches and complete the scenes in any order before returning to Sheogorath.
In one of the challenges you will find Pelagius in his bed sleeping. Sheogorath tells you that Pelagius has been suffering from night terrors since he was a child, and to get rid of them. Use the Wabbajack on him to summon his first night terror and dispatch it with the Wabbajack. Continue to do this until you have defeated all the night terrors.
You will have to fight a wolf, a bandit chief, a hagraven, a Flame Atronach and lastly, a dragon priest who tends to summon a Frost Atronach to help him.
In this scene you will see Pelagius’ Anger attacking Pelagius’ Confidence. Confidence is clearly losing, as it is tiny and Anger is large. Sheogorath wants you to tip the scales.
Use the Wabbajack on Anger until he is tiny, and then use the Wabbajack on Confidence until he is as big as Anger was, simple!
You will arrive at an arena within a fort like structure, wherein two Storm Atronachs are battling one another. One of them is yours and the other is your opponent’s, who is on the other side of the arena flanked by two other men. Sheogorath will tell you Pelagius’ mother had a hand inflaming his paranoia. He wants you to locate Pelagius’ paranoia and win the battle you are witnessing.
The key here is not to try to destroy your opponent’s Atronach, as that is only the effect of Pelagius’ paranoia, not the source. Your opponent on the other side of the arena is your true target. In order to destroy him, use the Wabbajack on the men on either side of him. They will turn into wolves and attack your opponent, killing him.
Now that you have treated Pelagius’ troubled mind, head back to Sheogorath and receive your reward, the Wabbajack! He will summon Dervenin and his luggage before sending you back to Skyrim in the Pelagius Wing of the Blue Palace. Continue down to the basement after completing the quest to find a copy of ‘Surfeit of Thieves’, a +1 Lockpicking skill book.
The Wabbajack staff can be an effective tool against powerful opponents such as Dragon Priests due to its range of debilitating and/or instantly fatal effects. It’s a very fun item to use in battle, as its effects are random and unpredictable.
